I'm always down for a big eyeshadow palette that offers a variety of shades and finishes.
But sometimes, you just want a few basic shadows that you can put a quick look together with whether you're in a hurry to get out the door for school or work or traveling.
The Balm makes some of my favorite eye shadows, and I love the smaller trios and quads they put sometimes -- partly because they're very affordable but mainly because they provide everything you need for those fast eye looks.
The SmokeBalm Vol. 4 Foiled Eyeshadow Palette is the perfect example.
It contains three pretty basic shades, but they can work for pretty much any skin tone and perform so beautifully that it's a pretty nice addition to any collection.
Like all of The Balm's palettes, the SmokeBalm Vol. 4 comes in sturdy cardboard packaging with adorable retro artwork. Inside, there's a tiny mirror that's not much good for anything.
The palette contains three shades: Striking, a metallic deep bronze; Luminous, a matte warm mid-tone brown; and Smoking, a metallic pale champagne.

All of the shadows are well pigmented and smooth. They apply and blend beautifully like all of The Balm's shadows, so no surprise there.
Because there are only three shades, you can really only do a few looks with the palette. But I actually like having a simple little trio that I don't need to think too hard about using -- I either use Smoking on the lid, Luminous as the transition shade, and Striking in the outer corner and crease, or go smoky with Striking blended out well across the lid, Luminous in the crease, and Striking as brow bone and inner corner highlight.
For me, this is the perfect little palette for traveling -- I took it with on a recent weekend trip, and it was everything I needed without taking up too much space in my makeup bag.
Now, you might be thinking, yeah, it's a nice little trio, but not anything new -- and I can't argue except to say that these are great shadows and the palette is only $14.50. If you've never tried The Balm's shadows before, it's a really great way to test out the formula.
You can purchase the palette on The Balm's website.
