Product Review -- Maybelline Color Sensational Vivid Matte Liquids

You'd have to be living under a rock to not know that liquid lipsticks are just about the hottest trend in makeup these days.

More specifically, every brand and their mother seems to be coming out with matte liquid lipsticks. As I've mentioned before, this isn't really my favorite type of lip product because they tend to be so drying and uncomfortable to wear.

But that doesn't mean that I don't see the value in having some liquid lipsticks in my collection -- they definitely have staying power that traditional lipsticks or glosses don't.

So I was excited to try Maybelline's version, the Color Sensational Vivid Matte Liquids.

Like most liquid lipsticks, they come in a tube with a flat doe-foot applicator. The Vivid Mattes' packaging is square, which I kind of like.

The formula is different too -- it's thicker and creamier than most liquid lipsticks. As a result, while it's slightly drying on the lips, it doesn't have that tight, uncomfortable feeling that many other formulas have.

These actually feel pretty nice on the lips.

However, while they last longer than traditional lipsticks, they don't last as long as those other really drying liquid lipsticks -- I probably get about five hours of wear with them if I'm not eating or drinking.

They can also transfer a little unlike many other liquid lipsticks.

I purchased the Vivid Mattes in three shades -- Nude Thrill, a warm brownish nude; Nude Flush, a pinky nude, and Possessed Plum, a rich, deep plum.

Nude Thrill is nice, but a little too warm for me. Nude Flush is a lovely everyday color. I also like mixing the two when I'm in the mood for a more neutral.

I  purchased Possessed Plum mainly because it was a shade so out of my comfort zone, but I actually love it -- it's not quite as dark as it appears in the tube and I sheer it out a lot more by blotting it and rubbing it into my lips.

If you've been avoiding these because you were worried that they'd be uncomfortable, you don't have to worry -- you should still exfoliate and moisturize your lips well before and after, but they won't crack your lips.

I'm not crazy about the scent of them personally -- a little flowery, I'd say -- but it's not a deal breaker for me.
